Pottery Barn Knock-Off DIY Clock

/Posted by / 8

I’m so excited to finally get to share my DIY clock that I’ve been working on for the home office makeover. I’ve been searching for a large clock and finally found the look I wanted, but at a hefty price tag. Hefty like $279! Uh, yeah. No way I can squeeze that in the budget no matter what excuse I come up with. So I made my own version of my favorite Pottery Barn clock for only $20!

diy-clock-pottery-barnCha-Ching! That’s music to my ears… and my bank account. I made this clock using a table top I already had and a “handy” clock kit from Hobby Lobby.

Here’s the Pottery Barn clock that inspired this project:pottery-barn-clock

And here’s my thrifty version that allows me to still sleep at night. 🙂diy-clock- for less

I made this clock from a table top that I already had. You know the ones… three wooden dowel legs, throw a tablecloth over it and call it done kinda table?

That table had been hiding in the attic for eons, and I knew that round table top would be perfect for making my DIY clock.

I used the same paint I used to make over the hope chest in the office. It took three coats of paint for a smooth finish.diy clock

I measured and found the center of the circle, then using a compass (a makeshift compass with pencil and string) I traced out my circles. I painted over my lines with the same paint color I used on the office walls, Sherwin Williams Aloof Gray.how to make a clock

I painted on the numbers all free-hand style , like I’m some sort of ar-teest or something. ha! That explains why their a bit, okay maybe a lot of crooked. Moving on…

I picked up the upholstery nails from Lowe’s. Finally after posting all those ideas about nailbrad trim, I’m putting all that inspiration to work!nail brads

At this point, I was starting to wonder if my DIY clock would actually keep time. It wasn’t the precision of the clock kit I was worried about. It was my ability to accurately position the numbers on the dial enough to be able to tell time. 🙂

I drilled a hole in the center for the clock hands kit. No turning back now! I had decided worse case scenario, it would become a “clock table”. I would just screw those three wooden dowel legs back in to the bottom, put a finial where the hole is and call it a conversation piece. That would work, right??

The clock hand kit came from Hobby Lobby for about $15 with my 40% off coupon. I used the high torque movement clock hands for the larger dial.

Here’s the finished product! And guess what? It keeps time!  diy-clockIt may not be perfect, but it’s totally worth it get the look I wanted for less than $200. WAAAAY less. 😉 Now I can use that money I saved on more updates to the office! More to come soon and I can’t wait to share with you!
