You’ve found a favorite quote or a sign that you love. You know it would look great displayed over your bed or over the couch. Yep, that’s the one! If you purchased it in the store, you might bring it home only to find out it’s not really the right size. It looks too small or too big, but maybe it will do.
When you order a handmade sign, you get to choose the perfect size for your space. The only problem is, you don’t do interior design. Who knows what size it should be, you just want it to look good! Here are some tips and a guide to help you determine the best size of art for your space. Let’s start with the basic sizes.

Mini Signs
Mini signs range anywhere from 4″ x 5″ and smaller. These small works of art are perfect for decorating a tiered tray, creating a small centerpiece on a table, tucking in with a few other pieces on a shelf, or they even make perfect gifts, especially if you have several people to buy for.

Small Signs
The perfect size for a small sign is around 8″. One of our most popular sizes of small signs is an 8″ x 8″ square sign. Small signs can be placed on shelves, used in vignettes, or part alongside other pieces as part of a gallery or display. These are the perfect size for a bathroom or a shelf in a kid’s room.

Medium Signs
Medium sized signs include 12″ x 12″ and 11″x 14″. Ideally hung on the wall or placed on a shelf, this size is small enough to be styled with other pieces but large enough to also stand out on their own. We see these work best in small entryways, hung above accent chairs and side tables, or used for layering on a side table or shelf.
A more longer size, such as a 12″x 6″ or 15″x 8″ work well over the stove. Both small and medium size art work well in the kitchen where wall space can be limited.

Large Signs
Large signs are great for places where you have much more wall space like the dining room, living room, or bedroom. These rooms tend to have larger furniture so a larger sign helps create balance. We also see large signs like a size 12″ x 28″ used in a laundry room to balance a wall opposite the washer and dryer.
Want to make your fireplace a focal point this season? A large size canvas is the perfect size for that space on your mantle.

Statement Pieces
Oversized wall art is best displayed above the bed or sofa. These include signs that are 12″x 48″ or even 20″ x 30″. Depending on the size of your fireplace, you can also use these on the mantle.

Outdoor Signs
Some of the most requested orders we get are for outdoor signs. Here some guidelines for outdoor spaces and the size sign that would work for each space:
Front Porch Vertical Sign: 12″ x 48″
Hang on the door: 14″ – 16″ round or square
Address sign on the porch:
This depends on your spaces, but we see sizes from 8″ x 15″ up to 10″ x 30″
Back porch wall:
- 16″ x 20″ for most spaces
- 20″ x 24″ for larger walls
Numbers for the mailbox:
- 3″ to 3.5″ wide to mount on a 4″ x 4″ post

Choosing the Right Size Confidently
No more purchasing that sign you like at the store, only to get it home and it be the wrong fit for your space. Maybe it fits but there’s just something a little off. Keep your walls looking clean and uncluttered with these tips and tricks to try before you buy!
Measure first
This takes just a few minutes but can make a huge difference. Here’s a little formula for you. Measure your wall and then multiply that measurment by .57, and then again by .75.
For instance, if your wall space is 36 inches wide, we multiply 36 x .57 and 36 x .75. This means a size that is close to the size of 20″ x 27″ could work perfect for this space.
Determine your style
Do you want to create a gallery of photos, wall decor, and incorporate a sign with your favorite quote? Measure your wall as above to determine how much space you have to work with. Your entire gallery should fall within those measurements. From there, you can decide if you want one large piece in the center, the top, or smaller pieces throughout. Remember to allow a few inches in between your pieces for spacing.
Take a Test Drive
Grab the painter’s tape or masking tape! Once you decide on what size sign you would like for your space, outline those measurements on your wall. Having this up for a day or two will give you a good feel for the size and if you made the right decision. You can even leave the tape up until your new sign arrives just so you have the space ready to go when you receive your new artwork!
