How to Install Window Casing

/Posted by / 11

Hey there! Hope you had a good weekend! I managed to make a little more progress in the home office re-do with some window casing, and I’m pretty excited about how it turned out that I’m planning on doing it throughout the house. One more item for my never ending to-do list, right? 🙂

Adding just some simple trim around the windows can really change the look of a room and you only need some simple tools to do it!

installing window casing

Tools used to install window casing:

Miter box and handsaw ($10 from Home Depot)

Liquid Nails

Paintable wood filler

Brad Nailer and nails, of course!

Measuring tape

and of course the trim of your choice!

Installing this window casing was so easy, that I had two windows done in about an hour. … minus the painting.

To start, decide what trim you want to use and measure your window. (Measure twice, cut once!) Using the miter box and saw, cut the trim to size. If you are using the same size trim all the way around the window, you can easily cut your corners on a 45 degree angle with the miter box.  I also purchased pre-primed, paint ready trim to help cut out a step of painting. 🙂

I applied liquid nails to the back side of the trim and nailed it in place around the window.

I did not use 45 degree cuts for the trim around these windows because I chose two different sizes in trim.  Whether you use 45 degree angles or not, you’re sure to have a few gaps at the seams like this.

This is an easy fix with the wood filler. I filled in all the gaps and holes where I nailed the trim to the wall. (Nevermind that gawdy blind bracket in the window, please, thank you!)

After the wood filler dries, you may want to take a fine grit sandpaper and lightly sand the surface smooth where the wood filler was applied. Then you are ready to paint!

I used a white enamel paint and applied two coats. Now the windows in this room have gone from plain and boring to a more finished look. I still want to add one more piece of trim at the bottom of the window sill.  These windows already had a faux marble window sill in place so it was easy to just install the trim around it!

So do you already have window trim in your home or have you installed it yourself? I kinda just sit here and stair at our windows now cause they’re just so pretty! Yeah, I’m weird like that. Hopefully I will get even more done later this week in this room to have more progress to update you on!

Also, if you have been following along with my posts on blogging tips, be sure to check back this week. I’ll be sharing posts on how to get more comments and build readership. Some simple things that might be able to help!
