Think back to your childhood for just a moment- can you remember a time when you felt discouraged for your creative efforts? Maybe events in your life took you down a path away from your creativity.
Even if you can't remember the turning point for you, try to remember a time when you enjoyed being fearlessly creative. Did you love to draw, to paint, sing, or dance? Maybe you just liked building things or making crafts. Can you remember the energy and happiness of creating anything you could imagine without limitations? It may have been a long time ago, but there was a day when you weren't afraid of your creativity.
There's this perception many of us have that creativity is something elusive and mysterious, that it happens in some “a-ha” moment that we can’t predict or control, and that people are either creative or they're not. Somehow, what comes totally natural for almost every kid seems un-natural and awkward to us adults.
Here's the deal...Creativity is not some magic skill only the Joanna Gaines and Martha Stewart's of the world possess. It just needs the right environment and some time to grow. You CAN reclaim your creative side!
Before you say, "What creative side? I can barely put my outfits together in the morning!" Stop. Just stop and trust yourself for a minute here with me.
We live in a world full of rules. Rules that try to define the right way and the wrong way to do things. Rules that lead us to believe that in order for something to be "good" it has to be perfect.
Creativity is about knowing the “rules” for what you wish to create, and then having the courage to break them. Pablo Picasso once said, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”
I believe everyone was born creative. Creativity doesn't mean being able to draw or paint the best picture, or make a home that's worthy of HGTV. It means taking risks and ignoring doubt. It means not being afraid to try something...maybe something different, even if there is the chance of failure.
Sometimes it’s messy.
It will feel uncomfortable at first.
But if you stick with it, the creative process will leave you energized and empowered like nothing else can. It can awaken a part of you that has been dormant for years! And its gifts are the tangible results you can enjoy in your home and share with your family.
And if you don't have the right environment for creativity or you never practice what you have always had in you since you were brought into this glorious creative world, then it’s no wonder this may feel like a struggle!
If you don’t invest in your own natural creative skills, then how can you expect to get better? Sorry to break it to ya, but all those pins you have on Pinterest don't count my friend... and I am just as guilty of this!
We have to change the thought that you have to be "creative" to make incredible things. Change the thought that there is a right or wrong way to create or that it has to be perfect to be good.
You may not believe in yourself yet, but I BELIEVE IN YOU!
We must begin to challenge ourselves to uncover what we all innately desire - the ability to create. Stick around 'cause we're gonna show you how.
In the meantime, share your thoughts in the comments. What's holding you back from being more creative?
