I’m so happy that I managed to finish our advent calendar before December 1st! This is our first year doing an advent calendar. Our daughter is 18 months old so I wanted to keep it simple, fun, and meaningful. This is the start of a new Christmas family tradition!
This was so easy to make and some of the items used were already in my craft supply. I used Martha Stewart’s Christmas tag pad and foam letter “thickers” for each of the days. (Picked up at Hobby Lobby on sale!)
Then I used two 16×20 art canvases that I picked up at Michaels – on sale and with a coupon!
I painted them red and glued baker’s twine to the sides to hang the tags from.
I made some Christmasy clothespins which I’ll share with you in another post very soon! They work perfectly to hang the tags on the baker’s twine.
I glued red ribbon to the sides of the canvas to cover the twine and give it a more finished look.
Since I don’t have a Silhouette machine (although it’s on my wishlist!) for the lettering I had to get a little creative. I printed out the words using the Sofia font in 140 pt size. To transfer the lettering to the canvas, I rubbed chalk on the back of the paper and traced around each letter to create a chalk outline.
Then just fill in your letters with a couple of coats of craft paint!
Our advent calendar this year tells the story of Christmas with each day. I found this cute free printable at Happy Home Fairy.
I cut out the verse for each day and glued it to the back of the corresponding cards. Our schedules are so busy during the week, but I still managed to fill part of the week and every weekend with a fun family activity!
Here are some of the activities on our advent calendar this year:
Pick out a Christmas Tree
Listen & dance like crazy to Christmas Music
Watch a Christmas movie
Make Christmas goodies
Fun Christmasy craft with Mommy!
Make gingerbread house
Drive around and look at Christmas lights
Begin the 12 days of Christmas giving tree (post will come later on this too!)
and on Christmas Eve we all get to open one gift!
I can’t wait to enjoy our advent calendar and share the Christmas story as a family. The activities will be so much fun for all of us and I love that each day tells a story that’s so meaningful! I’m so looking forward to Christmas this year and you can bet that I’ll be spending this weekend decking the halls, the mantel, the tree, the whole house!! Fa-La-La-La-La!! 🙂
Do you do an advent calendar every year? What kind of activities do you share as a family?
